Mark Johanson is an American journalist based in Santiago, Chile. His stories about travel, food, culture and sustainability have appeared in publications such as National Geographic, Travel + Leisure, Men's Journal, Condé Nast Traveler, AFAR, The Economist, Newsweek, Food & Wine, The Guardian, Bloomberg, Vox, CNN, BBC and a variety of global travel and in-flight magazines. Before we set off on the Great Inca Trail of the Qhapaq Ñan, Jose Valverde (center) performed a traditional coca leaf offering 🍃at the ruins of Huanuco Pampa.
Earlier this month, I traveled to Peru to research a story for National Geographic about the Qhapaq Ñan - the 40,000km-long (25,000-mile) road network the Inca built through the Andes.
